History Dedication

Due to poor weather, the Commemoration of Historic Site will be held indoors at the FCC in the Foyer

The Canadian Society for Civil Engineering (CSCE) through the CSCE National History Committee will formally recognize the William L. Barrett Water Treatment Plant as a CSCE National Historic Civil Engineering Site on June 14.

In 1882, the City of Fredericton approved the construction of a water pumping station. Up until that time the 6000 citizens relied on local wells and these wells were often located close to privies on each property. At that time, the property loss from fires was great and the deaths from typhoid fever were significant. Although changes in technology have been incorporated into the facility over the years, the initial 1883 building is still a part of the current water treatment plant.
