About the Course
Similar to LEED for buildings, Envision® provides a holistic framework for planning, designing, and delivering more sustainable and resilient infrastructure. Envision is applicable to all types and sizes of infrastructure, including airports, bridges, dams, green infrastructure, levees, power plants, roads, water treatment facilities, and all other components that make up civil works. Envision is the product of a joint collaboration between the Zofnass Program for Sustainable Infrastructure at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design and the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure. With over 7,000 professionals trained to use Envision in North America and globally, the Envision system is increasingly being used by public and private agencies across Canada.
With over 5 years of experience applying Envision on billions of dollars’ worth of infrastructure projects, ISI has incorporated key lessons learned into the next version of Envision, known as Envision v3. The Envision Sustainable Professional (ENV SP) educational program is a full-day credentialing program for training participants to use Envision v3 and to incorporate systems-level thinking into their approach to sustainability, considering the broader and often overlooked, impacts of a project. The purpose of this training is to equip participants to use the Envision framework and rating system and to prepare participants to take the examination to become an ENV SP. The course is designed to be engaging, utilizing a highly interactive approach that features group case-study work. Overall Learning Objectives. At the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Understand the need for sustainable, resilient, low-carbon infrastructure and how sustainability can be defined in this context;
- Understand the logic, organization, and methodology of the Envision v3 framework;
- Use Envision to plan, design, and deliver more sustainable infrastructure;
- Use Envision to assess the sustainability of infrastructure projects;
- Understand and describe the verification process;
- Navigate the ISI website and Envision v3 project portal;
- Appreciate the important role of an ENV SP; and
- Qualify to take the ENV SP exam for your credentials.
Melissa Peneycad is Director, Sustainable Projects at the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure. She oversees and directs the verification program for the Envision rating system for sustainable infrastructure. Marty Janowitz is Vice President, Sustainable Development at Stantec. He serves on both Harvard’s Sustainable Infrastructure Advisory Board and ISI’s Envision Review Board, which oversaw development of Envision and now Envision V3.
